Silky Oak
has an open texture compared to other timbers. It can reach
heights of 40 metres and a width of 2 metres.
Silky Oak is pinkish or reddish brown, turning browner with
age. There is sometimes a golden sheen to the wood, but the
most prominent feature is the large rays which produce a well
marked silver - grain figure. The wood is straight grained and
the texture coarse, but even.
Our Silky Oak comes from Brazil and it has warmer pale pink
tones and the natural fish scale pattern. A nice timber to work
with, it is best used with simple designs so the grain pattern
can stand out.
Uses: Furniture, cabinets and decorative items, paneling, shop
fitting and veneer
